His third album brought about outlaw country evolution. In 1975 his single You Never Even Call Me by My Name was #8 on Top 10 singles. He appeared in the 1975 documentary film Heartworn Highways.

The Outlaw Country movement gained total momentum in 1976. He co-wrote all the songs in the third album from Columbia. Throughout the 70s he released some of his famous singles. At the beginning of 1981, the movement started to fade into the background. Coe came back hard in 1983 with his Castles in the Sand which peaked at #8 on the chart.
