Born in Macon, Georgia, United States, Damon Johnson moved to Monroeville, Alabama when he was in elementary school. Soon, he developed a passion for playing guitar. During eighth grade along with his friends he formed a garage band which they named Renegade. Later, he along with his family relocated to Geraldine, Alabama, and finished his high school there. He kept his passion for music burning and started performing with local bands across northeast Alabama. Johnson accepted an offer to join Split the Dark and moved to Birmingham, Alabama during 1987. The band was popular within the southeast colleges and won MTV “Basement Tape” competition in 1986. Later he played in the bands Chinatown and Chyld. While playing in Chyld, Johnson drew the attention of Virgin Records and secured a deal in 1990. The record label convinced Johnson to the position of lead vocalist and change the name of the band to Brother Cane.
It was during his time in Brother Cane, Johnson got notoriety. The band released its debut album in 1993 and later in total released three albums from Virgin Records. The releases would make three single trend as #1 on rock radio. The band continued to see success until it disbanded in 1999. Beside the band Johnson also acted as supporting roles in famous bands such as Aerosmith and Lynyrd Skynyrd.
After the split Johnson recorded solo albums and it consisted of his own compositions. He also collaborated with different artists in songwriting. In 2004 Johnson joined Alice Cooper’s band and went on many tours around the world with the band. Johnson joined Thin Lizzy in 2011 when he was invited by the guitarist of the band. After a year in 2012 Johnson co-founded the band Black Star Riders.
