Born in Stanmore, Middlesex, England, Idol moved to the United States with his parents when he was just two. There they lived in New York and his younger sister was born during that time. After four years they moved back to England settling in Dorking, Surrey. Idol debuted as a musician in 1976 as a guitarist for the band Chelsea. Soon he along with his bandmate Tony James left the band and formed Generation X. The band soon disbanded and Idol moved to New York to pursue his solo career in 1981. He had help from the guitarist Steven Stevens. As a solo artist, his debut album Billy Idol was a huge hit in 1982. He became a staple artist with his music videos for Dancing with Myself and White Wedding.

Idol again gained wide notoriety for his second album Rebel Yell in 1983. His singles Rebel Yell and Eyes Without a Face became certified double platinum by selling 2 million copies within the US. In 1986 Idol released his third album and that same year his three singles took place in UK top 10 singles.

Idol took a hiatus from the second half of 1990s as he focused on his personal life during that time. He returned in 2005 with the release of his sixth album Devil’s Playground. He later released another album in 2014.
